Thyroid cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the front of the neck. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.
Several types of thyroid cancer exist. Most types grow slowly, though some types can be very aggressive. Most thyroid cancers can be cured with treatment.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
- Swelling at the front of the neck
- Change of voice (Hoarseness)
- Difficulty in breathing
- Difficulty in swallowing
HOW TO DETECT?
- Ultrasound of neck to characterise the swelling
- FNAC (Needle test) of the swelling
- Blood thyroid profile
WHAT NEXT?
- Total thyroidectomy – Removal of the entire thyroid gland
- If lymph nodes are enlarged, lymph node dissection is needed
- Based on the histopathology, Radio iodine therapy may be needed
